Sillead (formerly Ardenvale)

History (Ardenvale)

Ardenvale was originally inhabited solely by the Shifters, who formed a tight-knit society of towns that networked across the vast plains. Ardenvale was riddled with rich deposits of iron, which the Shifters mined to trade to craft or sell for various goods from other nations. They skirmished occasionally with the other two island nations for rare resources, but also occasionally aided them in their military pursuits. Immeral would occasionally attack them as a show of force, but Ardenvale consistently showed that, while Immeral’s superior magic may do well in a direct war, it did not do well when 2-ton balls of iron punched holes in their ship and stopped them from landing. When the time came for the Trade Treaty of Kaplin, the Shifters were the first to sign, though they were shrewd negotiators. When Human settlers appeared in a ramshackle group of ships that crashed on the shore, the Shifters approached watched them from afar to gauge their intentions. The Humans seemed well-to-do enough, only forming a large farming communities on unoccupied lands, and the Shifters managed to gather enough information to know that the Humans were a large group that had escaped a far-away tyrant by sea. The Humans had lost many in their escape and long ocean voyage, but still managed to arrive tens of thousands strong. The Shifters gathered and decided to alert the Humans to their presence and see whether there would be war or peace. The Shifters sent in a small contingent of about 20 men into the main Human village, and informed the humans that they were on but a small unoccupied portion of a much larger land mass occupied mostly by the Shifters. The Humans made it clear that they had escaped a place of much turmoil and would prefer to avoid further fighting. Both races entered into a treaty, and both sides honored it. Eventually war ships from the Human tyrant came, and began attacking the coast, but the Shifters easily overcame the comparatively small fleet with their natural flair for battle. The Humans were indebted to the Shifters for protecting them from their tyrant’s evil grasp. Across time, Human settlements grew across the land, eventually outnumbering the once-dominant Shifters. As generations passed, the Humans forgot the favors of the Shifters, and their predecessors’ struggle to find peace. The Humans coordinated an assault on the capital of the Shifter Kingdom, leveling the castle. For a time the Shifters fought, but knowing that their royalty were all dead or missing sent a blow to their morale. They cried to the other two nations for assistance, but when the Humans gave word that they would honor the Trade Treaty of Kaplin after taking over, the Shifters cries fell on deaf ears. (The fall of Ardenvale occurs about 8 years before the events of the current campaign.)
